Next to where I live, there's a soccer field - or something that may remind a passerby of one. It doesn't have a single blade of grass, the goal posts are made of the borders are dangerously close to house windows. However, every day kids gather there to play, to try tribbles and kicks they have seen on television and to celebrate the joy of playing the world's most popular sport.
Soccer is a community act played on the streets, on playgrounds, on empty areas, but it is also a huge phenomenon. The 2006 world cup's final match between France and Italy in Germany was watched by one billion people. That is 1/5 of the world's population. No sports event had ever attracted an audience that big. And it grew to these proportions in over little more than one hundred years.
soccer, or football, started in the most prestigious schools in britain. At the time, each school had its own rules to the game. In one school for instance, players were allowed to hold the ball with their hands, although they could not run with it. These rules were unified in the 1860's, and by then, the sons of the men who worked for the british empire had already taken the sport to remote places such as Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Italy, India and even the U.S. Meanwhile football also took to the hearts of the sons of working class families in back england. And as early as 1888 they organized football's first professional league with 12 teams.
but what is so magical about the spory? Why is it called the beautiful game? For one thing, it is really the joy of playing that counts. Soccer is a lot more than just playing to win. Skills, tactics, organization, stamina all go into it. Soccer also resembles human nature like no other sport. Referees make mistakes and get fooled by players. Unfair as this may be, it adds to the game"s unpredictability. Finally, the game is a big show for show-offs. Take a look at the funny haircuts, bandanas, flashy boots worn both by players and fans. All this adds to the fascination that the game exerts on people of every nation, every creed, every class and every ethnic background.
