BULLYING
Bullying is a situation in which a person uses strength or influence to hurt or intimidate others.
Bullying is a world social problem and it happens in every school. Bullying includes calling people names, taking things away from them, damaging their belongings, sending people offensive phone calls or notes, threats and intimidation.
Bullies aren’t born; they’re made. They are a product of their environment. Bullies have a superior sense of identity, they are highly confident in their abilities and they decide on to affirm themselves and their position in the social order with force or persecution.
Bullies feel in control when they intimidate others and they feel their peers admire their cruel behavior. It is not so much the victim that gives a bully his or her sense of power it is the inactions, of spectators that feeds the bully’s sense of identity.
Some people think bullying is just part of growing up and a way for young people to learn to defend themselves. But bullying can make young people feel lonely, unhappy, and frightened. They lose confidence and think there is something wrong with them.
The most common response people have when they see bullying is to do nothing. And this is the origin of the problem. Inaction is like adding fuel to the bullying fire. People who become involved with a bully may seem to be offering a bully the most positive reinforcement but in reality it is the vast majority of people who do nothing that maintain that bully bullying. Why? This complacency is what gives bullying its staying power.
Many people fear that if they intercede to stop a bully they will make themselves a target and there is some validity to this fear. Bullies do not like being confronted. However when one person stands up to a bully other indifferent bystanders often jump in to action in support of the person confronting the bully. Most people do not like bullies. They do not like observing another person being bullied. They want to stop bullies but do not have the courage to jump in to the bully’s warpath. When somebody else makes the first move it is more likely that others will follow. Bullies always back down when more than one person confronts them. If you stand by and do nothing when you see a bully at work you are a part of the problem. Want to be a part of the solution? Here are some things you can do to stop a bully the next time you see them irritating someone.
• Play like a friend to the bully and interfere by warning them that a teacher, adult or other person with authority is on the way. Call out “I see Mr. Jones coming!”
• Quietly walk away and get help yourself.
• Distract the bully, be a joker and try to alleviate the situation or turn the bully’s attention to something else. A comment like “Hey (Bully’s Name), this isn’t worth it, let’s go play soccer.” can disperse a bullying situation quickly and without incident.
Bullies are reasonably confident people and they respond well to other confident people who do not challenge them directly. Bullies quickly lose their power when people stop passively accepting their behavior. When it comes to stopping a bully the best thing you can do is refuse to be a silent spectator.
And if you are being bullied, no matter how bad you feel you need to know that there are things you can do.
• Always tell an adult - your parents, your teacher, your school counselor, because they can help you.
• Stay in a group - kids who bully prefer kids who are alone.
• Make a joke - kids who bully prefer the ones who are easily upset.
